Hi Lynne, My wife and I are US citizens and recently purchased an Amel Santorin in France, and although more involved that a domestic purchase, with the help of a very attentive boat broker there and a US agent in the US it went fairly smoothly and the boat is now US flagged and USCG documented. Ensuring proof of VAT paid status important and deflagging a non issue BUT it would not be done until boat was paid in full, so there must be a good level of trust, in the seller and his agents. We looked in the Netherlands also, and was very impressed by the quality of boats and marine facilities there. Good luck, Dave

Suggest you contact OCC member Michael Smith. He has recent experience of buying in Holland.

There are brokers who will "facilitate" a private sale which is useful as this will include use of their client account, and documentation validation is of value, and thus gives an audit trail. There are companies charging 1 or 2% of sale price, however this seems excessive - shop around. - we were offered €250, but up to €1000 would seem reasonable,

We are wondering whether anyone has experience of purchasing a yacht through a private sale on the continent.

How did you check to ensure there were no outstanding loans on the vessel,

Did you pay a deposit,

How did you manage the transfer of funds and the handover of the boat,

Did you have any problems with the seller deregistering the boat

Not withstanding the usual checks you have completed before purchase, were there any other pitfalls we should be aware of, such as formalities from the country of sale and return to the UK.

We would be most grateful to share your experiences so we can avoid a steep learning curve!

Thanks in anticipation Lynne and Alan
