St Paul - Pribilof Islands – 57°15.00'N, 170°15.00'W

Information Submitted by Willie Ker – Assent, 1993 PRIBILOF ISLANDS St Paul 57° 10’N 170° 15’W The harbour, which is in Village Bay on the SW side of the island, is being developed as a fishing port with breakwaters extending from the north and south. A fish processing ship is to be permanently moored there in future. It is now a secure harbour but space is limited. The island is well worth visiting to see the world’s largest northern fur seal rookeries as well as the multitude of nesting sea birds. At the time of our visit (Aug1993) facilities were not very developed but there is a small hotel where showers can be had and a restaurant/mess hall where an excellent buffet meal can be had (meal tickets from the hotel). There is a very adequate store serving the local community (mainly Aleut). There is a regular air service from Anchorage which is increasingly being used by bird watching tour groups and it could be worth joining one of their tour buses that go around the island. It is likely that facilities will improve rapidly once fishing starts here in earnest.
