Below is the advertising blurb for a new generation of satellite communications which would appear to move more towards SSB functionality. No mention of costs but it may be something to keep an eye on.

One-to-Many Global Communications with Just a Push of a Button with the new IC-SAT100 Satellite PTT from ICOM

SATELLITE PTT (Push-To-Talk) is a two-way radio system that uses the Iridium® satellite network. It can be used as a communication tool in remote, isolated areas where there are no mobile phones or landline network infrastructure. Even if terrestrial network infrastructure is rendered unusable by human or natural disasters, SATELLITE PTT can provide a stable back-up, independent from other networks.

Wide Area Global Communications
Real-Time, Low-Latency Communication
Built-in Emergency Key
Waterproof, Dust-tight and Durable Body

Hi Simon, Not sure I completely understand, but sounds interesting. Please keep reports coming as this gear comes to life. Dick

I took a closer look.

It works like a vhf hand held but uses the Iridium network which means that when you broadcast you will be heard by all of the same devices within a pre-defined radius. The size of the radius is defined by the subscription but may be many hundreds of miles.

Obviously it is only of any use if others are monitoring it but I can see that it would be very good for remote communities. Not so useful for offshore sailing at the moment. Price is £1,400. It has the usual Iridium SMS features too.
