Medical question - AED - Automatic External Defibrillator

I am wondering if anyone has advice on an AED for offshore sailing. Generally we are all getting older and with more 60+ Age sailors I thought I might like to carry an AED, not only for our boat but as a safety device for others in need. Has anyone had experience with an AED and have a recommendation for a rugged marine applicable device?

With many thanks

Hi Gregg,
I believe the data on wilderness use of an AED is sparse. Google AED and wilderness use and you will get some thoughtful answers, but little data. And offshore (and most anchorages) should be considered wilderness as one of the big issues is the care available after AED use.
BTW, I have known only one other Querencia: yours would not by any chance be a Valiant 42?

Hi Dick. Many thanks for your reply. I appreciate your comments and share your concerns.

No, Querencia is an Alden 44, Falmouth, Maine, USA. Where are you located?

There was an earlier discussion on this topic within this Forum triggered by the successful use of an AED at sea. Here is the link: https://forum.oceancruisingclub.org/Topic3776.aspx#6416

Hi Gregg,
Alchemy has made it to the Great Lakes where we are looking forward to a few seasons in those waters: otherwise we remain homeless.
To elaborate on my previous comment: AEDs (I believe) have proved to be a very effective intervention when wedded with quickly administered professional care (EMTs and hospitals
Querencia is a great name (although it probably brings questions and spelling requests in this part of the world) on a very good looking boat.
My best, Dick

Gregg, Much more, and better put, information to be found following Simon's suggestion. Dick
