We came back once via the Kiel Canal which I wouldn 't particularly recommend as a route (in either direction). Alternatively, it would be a great trip from Plymouth via the west coast of Scotland and then using Kirkwall as your final point of departure. Obviously a good bit longer and you would need plenty of time. We had a super wind and were able to sail the whole thing including the narrow dredged section.
