Shengen and Crew Lists

Hello,

I am doing some research for some Canadians that will be picking up their boat in April 2024 in La Rochelle and then intend to do the ARC Nov 2024. The Schengen 90 in 180 days is a challenge. They are intending to head to Montenegro to not use up their 90 days. However, I have heard of some cruisers that get customs to stamp them out of Schengen on their passports and stamp them in on a crew list, but this does not seem to be applied consistently. Does anyone have any first hand experience of this i.e. that French Customs would stamp them out of Schengen on their passports and treat them as "crew in transit"?

I was there last year, the biggest challenge was finding anywhere to get stamped in. Malaga or Motril in Spain have ferry ports, so are useful. The easiest was Gibraltar which you can walk across the border on one side of the road and re-enter the other side having been stamped out of Europe. In Gran Canaria the immigration official goes to the marina office for a few hours each day, if he turns up; failing that you can walk to the ferry port and get stamped in/out there. You’ll need your departure paperwork on the other side.
