Back in Reykjavik

Shimshal is now back in Reykjavik after a fabulous Arctic 2016 cruise.

In April we cruised the Hornstrandir National Park in northern Iceland and were able to use her as a ski mountaineering base to explore those mountains in fine spring snow conditions.

In July and August we were lucky enough to find both good weather and unprecedented ice conditions when we sailed to north east Greenland in order to explore Scoresby Sound - the longest fjord system in the world. We managed to penetrate 170 miles inside the fjord before being blocked by ice in our attempt to circumnavigate Milne Land. The whole adventure was extraordinary.

Thanks Dick it was a great trip. Hoping you are still planning to head north next summer. We are still planning to cruise south from Tasilak before traversing Prince Christian Sund and then Greenland 's West Coast next season. I do hope our paths coincide. Are you overwintering in Scotland this year?

Dick,
Difficult to predict I am afraid. Here are a couple of satellite photos. As you will see it was open on the 14th June this year but the second picture was on the 26th July 2015 when it was only just opening up. Certainly 2015 was a bad year and 2016 an exceptionally good one. I think we would be unlucky to find it blocked during the last week of July 2015 but it is very variable.

Shimshal is spending the winter ashore in North Greenland in the care of Sisak Tecnic.
For a somewhat lengthy slide show of our summer 2017 cruise go to:

This contains slides, video and timelapse but beware it lasts 25 minutes!
