Shetlands- 6 bays/harbours inc. Lerwick 60º00 'N 01º04W B005-1

Information Provided by: John & Sally Melling - Taraki - 1998 Barra : Castle Bay : Highlands Authority mooring buoys are available at no charge. Dinghy landing at ramp near ferry terminal. Marine diesel at garage just round corner from landing. Water at quay. It is possible to get showers at Castle Bay Hotel (£2) A few shops with all the basics. Bike hire in the village.

Lochinver : Anchorage off pier with Harbour Masters office, keep clear of fairway, which is marked by a line of yellow buoys (also 5m. line) ; there is a lot of fishing boat activity. Diesel (cheap) is available at ice plant, but make arrangements with staff before going alongside (timber pile quay!) Shops, restaurants, bank etc in village and reasonable chandlery but mostly geared to fishing boats.
SHETLANDS :

Brae (Busta Voe) : Anchorage off Brae at head of Voe; sand with weed. (we rode out gale here) Village shop and garage.

Hamar (Ura Firth) : Very protected almost land locked attractive small anchorage (mud). No facilities ; derelict crofts ; fish farm.

Balta Sound - UNST : Large protected anchorage ; anchor SW off Sandisons Wharf. This wharf has been extended recently and it is acceptable for yachts to moor on the inside of the arm where it is well fendered with tyres. There is a good village shop with bakery and a garage nearby. Interesting small museum at Haroldswick with examples of traditional Shetland fishing boats (Sixareens) together with history of the herring fishing industry.

Mid Yell - YELL : Anchorage off jetty in 4 - 10m. with good holding. The jetty is busy with fishing boats, some of which service the fish farms in the Voe. It may be possible to go alongside for a short while. There are two general stores , a post office, a pub and a garage at head of jetty.

Lerwick : Yachts raft up along walls in either of two adjacent habours; check with Harbour Master on VHF for directions. There are comprehensive facilities.
