Upernavik Area



Rocks ?? 720 46.4N 550 57.3W

After several years and many traverses of the channel at the western end of the Torssût and north of Umiasugssuk, I am convinced the rock marked on the Danish charts in the centre of the channel (720 46.4N 550 57.3W) is NOT there. I guess they meant the rock which IS at 720 46.5N 550 56.4W

On the other hand there is a rock NOT marked on the chart, south of Qaesorssuaq (Sandersons Hope) near the island of Ikermia at approx 720 37.6N 560 00.4W

Anchorages



Torssút 720 47N 550 56W

Depth for anchoring in the bay to the north

Torssút alternative 720 46 550 54W

Pleasant anchorage in sand

Sortehul 720 44’N 550 44’W

It is worth pointing out that though there are a number of obvious fair weather anchorages in and around the Sortehul (Akornat) the only strong wind anchorage is at the northern end either side of Qornoq kangigleq (720 44’N 550 44’W) depending on wind direction.

A reasonable anchorage can also be made in the bay at Kingigtok (Iterdlagssuaq) at the southern end in northern winds, but the bottom is rocky

Naparsissunguaq 770 36N 550 39W

Pleasant anchorage by a sandy beach. Saves going into Tasiussaq opposite

Angmarqua Fjord 720 36N 550 23W

An intriguing hurricane hole guarded by three small islands, but with no depth for anchoring. Lines could be taken ashore.

Beware of isolated rock on approach from the south

Entry either well over on east side between island and the peninsular, or on the far west side

The inviting looking bay by Umanak to the north is in fact heavily silted up from the glacial river. It is possible to anchor before the silt bank further out but this is not so well sheltered.

Anitsoq Island



Nako 720 36N 550 09W

Delightful remote keyhole anchorage at the far end of the inlet. Depth for anchoring on northern side of keyhole bay. Beware however copious amounts of sea grass on bottom

Vaigat 700 24N 540 00W

The paucity of proper anchorages in the whole length of the Vaigat can be relieved by anchoring either side of the rock here on the northern side (source: Rich Haworth of High Latitudes).

Cape Farewell Area

The silt banks certainly come up very fast on approach in several of the havns on the map. However it is possible to anchor off the silt banks in lesser depths that the 40m mentioned in the Pilot (viz Stordalens Havn)!
