This will not directly affect many, if any OCC cruisers but is of general and theoretical interest regarding the susceptibility of AIS and GPS systems to malicious spoofing.

On 7 August the US Department of Transport Maritime Administration issued a warning suggesting that Iran is engaged in interfering with ships' GPS systems as they transit near the Middle Eastern nation. Apparently there have been reports of "spoofed bridge-to-bridge communications from unknown entities falsely claiming to be US or Coalition warships" from merchant ships. The warning goes on to explain that Iranian Navy and Islamic Revolutionary Guard corps vessels have spoofed merchant ships AIS systems to make themselves look like commercial shipping vessels.

Further, the US believes that Iran has GPS jammers operating on Abu Musa Island in the Arabian Gulf that are intended to cause international ships and aircraft to inadvertently enter Iranian waters.
