we want to sail to America next year.
Can anyone tell me what is important to the US Coast Guard?
What safety requirements are imposed and what resources you need to have on board.

Hi Paul,
I am US flagged and spent many years in the Europe. Many friends from the EU and UK sailed to the US and I do not remember any reporting issues with the US CG. I suspect if you follow Simon’s advice you will be just fine.
The issue may come, not from the CG, but when you might be asked for an insurance survey. I was in the EU long enough that I had to have 2 surveys and system requirements vary: what was ok in the US was not OK in the EU. This was most troublesome for the propane system, but also for the period of time the EU would have wanted my rod rigging replaced.
My best, Dick Stevenson, s/v Alchemy
PS. When you have an itinerary, let me know, I may have some thoughts that were useful to others.

Thanks for the responses.
I'm going to work on this.

Paul,

We spent a year cruising in the USA and were never inspected but we may have been lucky. We did try to comply with the rules by fitting locks to our holding tank valves, displaying the required posters and making sure all our equipment was in date.
There are plenty of online resources listing the rules such as the one below:
U.S. Coast Guard's minimum equipment requirements for boats of various lengths.
