Below is the advertising blurb for a new generation of satellite communications which would appear to move more towards SSB functionality. No mention of costs but it may be something to keep an eye on.

I took a closer look.

It works like a vhf hand held but uses the Iridium network which means that when you broadcast you will be heard by all of the same devices within a pre-defined radius. The size of the radius is defined by the subscription but may be many hundreds of miles.

Obviously it is only of any use if others are monitoring it but I can see that it would be very good for remote communities. Not so useful for offshore sailing at the moment. Price is £1,400. It has the usual Iridium SMS features too.
