Greetings:
Has anyone had any experience with lightning protection systems for sailboats?  Having suffered a bad strike 18 months ago, I know first hand what the damage was.  We lost all electronics, some electrical components, engine ECMs, alternators, batteries, starter motors......and the list goes on.  I recently came across a device called the CMCE Lightning Supressor.  Heres a link to the product:

I am interested to know if anyone has experience with this or other devices, or any direct knowledge as to whether such devives are beneficial

Thanks

Thanks for the info!  That's very probably just as effetive and way cheaper!  I think this is a topic where the true science is not well understood.  Or at least there is no certain way to protect.

Lightening Protection

Thanks Neil,

I’m not sure of the brand you mentioned, but I discovered the famous sailing boat called the Maltese Falcon uses Forespar’s lightening dissipators.

They look like an upside down metal loo brush on top of the mast… and available from UK chandlers such as Force4, they cost about ~ 🇬🇧 GBP£250 plus installation and cables.

I’m not sure how effective they are, as I haven’t been struck by lightning, but I was advised to install a single unit at the very top of my 12m boat’s mast.

Please do refer to the link attached;
