Simon,
The only place we berthed for free was Tvoroyri on the island of Suduroy. This is a fishing harbour (nicely sheltered) with few facilities for the visiting yachtsman but a very helpful harbour master. You can also clear customs here on arrival if you want to explore the island before going on to Torshavn. However, you are then faced with something of a logistical challenge - taxi to the ferry terminal on the south side of the fjord, ferry to Torshavn, taxi or bus to the airport etc. Torshavn, although expensive for your purposes, would certainly be your safest, worry-free berth with easy access to/from the airport.

Sorry not to be able to be more helpful,

Richard,
Thanks for getting back to me. I pretty much expected there to be few if any aternatives. What has disconcerted me is that Torshafn want to charge a £1600 minder 's fee in addition to the £210 harbour fees for a 3 week stay. It all sounds a bit curious.

Simon,

That is utterly, utterly staggering. Short of rescheduling your trip in order to avoid having to leave the boat there for three weeks (which may well not be possible) I am frankly at a loss as to what to suggest.

All of this is a real shame as the islands are such an amazing (and very special) destination.
