It depends to some extent on your UK starting point, but over the years we have tended to go direct from somewhere like Harwich straight to the west coast of Sweden. We came back once via the Kiel Canal which I wouldn 't particularly recommend as a route (in either direction).
Alternatively, it would be a great trip from Plymouth via the west coast of Scotland and then using Kirkwall as your final point of departure. Obviously a good bit longer and you would need plenty of time.
